Summary

In Lecture 7, it talks about the five-phase approach of BPR methodologies in detail. So, I would like to go through the five-phase approach and a case study on BPR Methodologies.

BPR Methodologies are methodologies that stem from differences between
l   Business activities and organizational strategy;
l   Current and desired productivity of organizational resources.

Five-phase approach

Many BPR projects were result in failure mainly due to those companies didn’t follow the correct methodologies to deal with the problems and achieve their goal to improve their business process. And these 5 phases are the systematical way to successfully implement BPR.

To start with, BPR project generally is a top-down approach therefore we start from the strategic level.

Phase 1 – Triggering & Executive Visioning
l   Decide the scope of redesigned process
l   Focus on the core processes only
l   Prioritize the process with limited resources

Phase 2 - BPR Project Mobilization
l   Form the core BPR Project team
l   Select the processes to be redesigned
l   Propose BPR plan and budget

Phase 3 - Process Redesign
l   Set the scope for redesign process
l   Model the AS-IS diagram
l   Perform analysis on the AS-IS process
l   Redesign the TO-BE process
l   Integrate process

Phase 4 - Implementation & Organizational Transformation
l   Adjust the IT infrastructure, the organization and people’s skills to fit the YO-BE process
l   Focus on the design of the IS that support the TO-BE process

Phase 5 - Monitoring & Maintaining
l   Monitor the new process continuously
l   Modifies if required

Case study

The following is a case study on Ancilliary Development Computer System - BHEL. BHEL is an integrated power plant equipment manufacturer and one of the largest engineering and manufacturing companies in India in terms of turnover. It was established in 1964.

Before the implementation of BPR, BEHL faced the following problems :
l  Existence of information islands with fragmented system
l  Cobol based systems was huge and difficult to maintain
l  User has access to lot of data but he is not getting the information wants
l  Integration exists only in paper
l  Usage of variety of software packages in a module
l  Accountability down the line is poor
l  Currency of data is poor
l  Difficult to get adhoc reports and to answer queries

Although there are several solutions, BHEL choose BPR at that time.

Its BPR objectives :
l  Cost Reduction
l  Time and space shrinkage
l  Quality enhancement
l  Work lift enrichment
l  Profit improvement

Steps in BPR :
l  Develop Business Vision and Process objectives
l  Identify processes to be reengineered
l  Understand and measure existing process

Strategy :
l  Study the existing system
l  Evolve the system design from first principles
l  Development of Data Model after Business Data Analysis
l  Identification of entities, attributes and relationships and Integrity Constraints
l  Batch to online conversion
l  Eliminate many steps in the existing system which are unnecessary

Finally, BHEL's computer system successfully migrated from COBOL to ORACLE using BPR strategy. Also the online system has introduced due to which the information has become current and the same is easily accessible by all users. People are empowered and life style changed with job enrichment.

Conclusion

To conclude, BPR is important in business improvement. However, there is no so-call "Best BPR Methodology" for all the companies. Company should follow the systematic BPR methodology in establishing the BPR project.

  1. - Should be more specific in the application of BPR methodology. Your desc in the example seems so generic that it can be applied to any other example. Yet, it is a good start to use example to illustrate concepts
